A surety bond is not insurance
People mix these up constantly, and the difference matters at claim time. Here it is in plain terms.
| Surety bond | Insurance |
|---|---|
| Three parties: you (the principal), the party requiring it (the obligee), and the surety that backs it. | Two parties: you (the insured) and the insurer. |
| Protects the obligee if you don't perform or meet the obligation. | Protects you against your own loss or damage. |
| You repay the surety for any claim it pays out. | The insurer absorbs the loss. You don't pay it back. |
| Guarantees you'll meet an obligation, a law, or a contract. | Transfers the risk of a financial loss to the insurer. |
| Underwritten like credit, based on your finances and track record. | Priced by pooling risk across many policyholders. |
Surety bond questions
What is a surety bond?
A surety bond is a three-party guarantee. You're the principal, the party requiring the bond is the obligee, and the surety stands behind it. It isn't insurance for you. It protects the obligee that you'll do what you're supposed to, and you're responsible for paying back any valid claim. We help you get the bond the obligee is asking for, fast.
How much does a surety bond cost?
You pay a percentage of the bond amount, not the full amount. The rate depends on the bond type and, for larger bonds, your credit and financials. Many small license and commercial bonds are an inexpensive flat rate, and you'll see the price before you commit.
How fast can I get bonded?
For most license and commercial bonds, minutes. You apply in the portal, get approved, pay, and the bond is emailed to you. Larger contract bonds take a little longer because they're actually underwritten, and that's where our surety team steps in.
Do Arizona contractors need a bond?
Yes. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors requires a license bond to hold a contractor license, and the amount depends on your license class and volume. On top of that, project owners and general contractors often require performance and payment bonds for the work itself.
What if my bond is large or my credit is complicated?
Start the online application anyway, or just call us. We work with Propeller's surety team to place the bonds that need a closer look, including bigger contract bonds and tougher credit situations.
Do freight brokers need a surety bond?
Yes. Every licensed freight broker and freight forwarder must file a $75,000 BMC-84 surety bond with the federal FMCSA to activate and keep their operating authority. You don't pay the full $75,000, though, you pay an annual premium that's a small percentage of it, based mostly on your credit, and the bond renews each year. We can issue the BMC-84 and handle the annual renewal.
Do Arizona mortgage brokers need a bond?
Generally yes. The Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions (DIFI) requires licensed mortgage brokers to post a surety bond, filed through the NMLS. The amount is commonly $10,000 for brokers working only with institutional investors and $15,000 for those who accept funds from private individuals. As with any bond, you pay a premium, not the full amount. Confirm your exact requirement with DIFI, and we'll place the bond.
How much is an Arizona contractor license bond?
The bond amount is set by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors based on your license class and estimated annual work volume, and the ROC is the source of truth for that figure. What you actually pay is a premium, a small percentage of the bond amount, quoted from your credit and experience, so a larger required bond doesn't mean a large out-of-pocket cost. Most license bonds issue online in minutes.
Online bonds are issued through BrokerPro's partner Propeller. Approval, pricing, and bond availability are subject to the surety's underwriting and the requirements of the party requiring the bond. Information on this page is general and is not a quote or a guarantee of approval.
