Renters insurance in Arizona
Cover your belongings and your liability as a renter. Quote and buy a policy online in a few minutes through our partner ePremium, or have us shop it for you.
What does renters insurance cover?
Renters insurance, written on a form called an HO-4, covers the things you bring into a rental and your liability while you live there. If your belongings are stolen or damaged by a covered event, it helps replace them. If someone is hurt in your unit, or you accidentally damage the property, the liability side responds.
What it does not cover is the building itself. That part is your landlord's policy. Their insurance protects the structure they own. Yours protects everything you moved in and your own liability, which is why a landlord can carry full coverage and you can still be left paying for your own losses without a policy of your own.
Your belongings
Furniture, electronics, clothes, and the rest of your stuff, against covered events like fire, theft, vandalism, and certain water damage.
Your liability
If a guest is hurt in your place, or you damage someone else's property, this helps with the costs you're responsible for.
Somewhere to stay
Loss-of-use coverage helps pay for a hotel and other extra costs if a covered loss makes your unit unlivable for a while.
Why renters insurance is worth it
It's one of the few policies where the cost is low and the reasons to have it pile up fast.
We write renters insurance for tenants across Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Tucson, and Flagstaff, and everywhere in between in Arizona. For a fuller look at what a policy does and doesn't include, see what renters insurance covers.
Your landlord probably requires it
Most Arizona leases now ask for proof of renters insurance before you get the keys, often with a minimum liability amount.
Their policy won't replace your things
If the building burns, your landlord's insurance rebuilds the walls. Your laptop, furniture, and clothes are on you.
Liability follows you home
A guest slips in your kitchen, your dog bites someone, a candle starts a fire. You can be on the hook, and this responds.
It's genuinely cheap
Most renters pay around $12 to $25 a month, depending on coverage and where you live. Hard to find a better deal in insurance.

Renters insurance questions
Is renters insurance required in Arizona?
Arizona law doesn't require it, but most landlords do. It's common to see a renters policy written into the lease as a condition, usually with a minimum liability amount and the landlord listed as an interested party so they get notified about the policy.
How much does renters insurance cost?
For most renters, somewhere around $12 to $25 a month. The price depends on where you live, how much coverage you want, and your deductible. It's one of the cheapest policies you can buy, which is part of why landlords ask for it.
What does renters insurance actually cover?
Three things. Your personal belongings against covered events like fire, theft, and certain water damage. Your personal liability if you hurt someone or damage their property. And loss of use, which helps with the extra cost of staying somewhere else if a covered loss makes your place unlivable.
What is an HO-4 policy?
HO-4 is the industry name for a renters policy. It's the standard form built for tenants: it covers your own property and liability without insuring the building, since the building is your landlord's responsibility.
Does renters insurance cover my roommate?
Usually only the people named on the policy. A roommate you're not related to generally needs their own policy. Check before you assume you're both covered, because a claim is a bad time to find out you weren't.
Does renters insurance use my credit score?
Through ePremium, no. They don't use credit in their rating. Other carriers handle it differently, so if your situation is a better fit somewhere else and we place you there, we'll tell you how that carrier sets your rate.
Can I get covered today?
Often, yes. The online quote can take you from a quote to an active policy in a few minutes, which helps when a landlord wants proof of coverage before move-in day.
Does renters insurance cover electronics?
Yes. Your laptop, TV, phone, gaming gear, and the rest of your electronics fall under personal property coverage, protected against covered events like fire, theft, and vandalism. Two things to know: high-value items can hit a sub-limit, and coverage pays either replacement cost (enough to buy new) or actual cash value (depreciated). If you own expensive gear, ask us to confirm the limit and the settlement basis so a stolen laptop doesn't come back underpaid.
Does renters insurance cover water or monsoon damage?
It depends on the source. Sudden water damage, like a burst pipe or an overflowing appliance, is generally covered, and so is rain that gets in after a monsoon storm tears open the roof. What's not covered is flood, meaning rising water or water that flows in from outside during a storm; that needs a separate flood policy. Sewer or drain backup is usually excluded unless you add it by endorsement.
Does renters insurance cover theft outside my apartment?
Usually yes. Personal property coverage generally follows your belongings off-premises, so a laptop taken from your car, luggage stolen while traveling, or a bike lifted outside a coffee shop can be covered, subject to your deductible and any sub-limits. Theft from a vehicle is covered by your renters policy, not your auto policy, since auto insurance doesn't cover personal items left in the car.
